Expanding Early Modern “Central” Europe: Dimensions of the Reformations in Poland-Lithuania

Bryan Kozik, Ph.D. candidate in History

Much of the scholarly treatment of early modern Central Europe has been divided anachronistically by modern geographical and linguistic boundaries, and it has fallen short of productively integrating the polities and peoples of “East” Central Europe into historical narratives. Such treatment has masked the cultural and social fluidity between these regions, especially in the context of the Reformations. The career of Prussian humanist, diplomat, and Bishop Ioannes Dantiscus (1485-1548) and his role in the early Reformations in Poland-Lithuania are key to revealing this fluidity in modern scholarship. His connections and activities illustrate the need to make “Central” Europe much broader and more inclusive in scholarly and popular imaginations.
