Painted and carved portraits of Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) adorned the exterior and interior decorative programs of over 30 princely, state, and civic art museums during Europe’s great century of museum building.  What do these cycles say about Dürer, the cultural aspirations of these museums and their patrons, and the rise of art history as a new discipline?
